Shona Stone Sculpture – “Continuum”
Hand-carved from solid serpentine stone, this sculpture originates from the Shona people of Zimbabwe—renowned for their modern sculptural movement that gained international recognition in the mid-20th century. This piece reflects that legacy through a refined, abstracted form: a single loop encircling a smaller figure, evoking themes of protection, motherhood, and continuity. The circular shape—softened by touch and time—suggests quiet strength and generational connection. One side remains raw and uncut, grounding the sculpture in its material origins, while the other reveals the intimacy of form shaped by hand. The surface is selectively smoothed to highlight the stone’s natural depth and tonal variation. At 43 cm high and 6 kg in weight, it holds presence without imposition—an object that speaks through balance, texture, and restraint. Like many Shona works, it brings emotional resonance and sculptural weight to any space.
